New Venue

Daniel Bridges February 16, 2015 news No comments

Hi everyone,

I sent out a message a few weeks ago requesting presenters get in touch with me. Unfortunately only one person responded to this call. As a result, the journal club will be expanding its scope slightly to cover more areas than malaria in an attempt to attract a wider audience. The JC will also be moving to the Akros offices which are fortunately only a few hundred metres away from the NMCC so please come and join us at our next meeting which will be on the 19th March.

If you missed my last message about the need for presenters then please let me know if you are willing to present and your availability!

Happy New Year and Call for Presenters

Happy New Year to you all! Hope you all had a wonderful break over the festive season.

Last year was a great start to the Journal Club. We had a wide range of presentations from a number of different people and I think we achieved what we set out to do.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the year it became increasingly hard to find people willing to present. This may have been unfortunate timing, but I wanted to review whether there are enough committed people to continue meeting. Perhaps we need to change the frequency? meeting place? time? something else?

Ultimately the success of the Journal Club relies on all of us being willing to take the time to present, attend meetings and get involved. So if you find the Journal Club useful for keeping up with current advances in science, practising your presentation skills, networking, learning how to interrogate data or anything else then please email me with your thoughts at dbridges@akros.com Would also be good if you could let me know if you are willing to present at an upcoming meeting if they continue.

This is your chance to get involved and to have your voice heard, so I am looking forward to a flurry of emails!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Also wanted to let you know about a new platform that MESA (Malaria Eradication Scientific Alliance) have launched called MESA Track (click to follow link) which captures research projects pertinent to the malaria elimination and eradication research agenda. This could be a great tool to keep us all aware of work that is under way, but not yet published and to see what people around the world are doing in the malaria elimination / eradication space.

Ok, so you may not have given much thought to infographics, but there are loads of them out there specifically on malaria! They can be a great resource to share with friends, insert during a presentation (hint hint), or just to equip yourself with an easy to remember great little sound-bite that will help you to express the enormous impact that Malaria has!

Ever met someone scared of being eaten by a shark? Well while we can decide to not go into the water, none of us living in Africa have the luxury of stepping out of the mosquitoes domain:

World Malaria Day which is commemorated every year on the 25th April, is almost upon us again! World Malaria Day was first established in 2008, with the aim of providing “education and understanding of malaria”and to spread information on “year-long intensified implementation of national malaria-control strategies, including community-based activities for malaria prevention and treatment in endemic areas.” Zambia will also be commemorating the day with activities planned in Solwezi.

You can find out more information on World Malaria Day from the following websites:

Just wanted to remind you all that a great resource to get plugged into is Malaria World. Why not take a look at the website. While there, you can sign up for the weekly summary emails, read the various blogs, or make your voice by asking a question. I think MW is a fantastic resource…
